Fast Fashion
Lena and I dealt with the topic Toxic and
Fashion. We learned a lot about Fast Fashion and how clothes were
made in the countries in the East.
Afterwards we focused on the Topic Fast fashion and now we are shocked how this works.
Before the project, we didn’t know what Fast Fashion means, so we tried to make our own definition.
Our result was: “Fast fashion makes you feel out of trend. Every new week there is a new collection, you feel as if you have the need to buy the latest fashion, because it is new, and it is trendy. “
In the Internet we found "Five things about Fast Fashion you don’t want to know" on the website of the Huffington Post. Let us look at one of the five things:. First, once upon a time there were two fashion seasons (spring/summer and Fall/Winter). Now you have 52 “micro seasons”, so that you buy more clothes, because you feel out of trend. When you make a chart of this, it can looks like this:

We also did research on solutions of the Fast
Fashion problem and found some Ideas.
First of all, you can buy and use clothes made of sustainable, organic fibers (Bamboo, hemp, organic cotton, wool, and silk). Secondly, limit your purchases and donate everything you aren't using. We found these solutions on the website:fastfashion.weebly.com.
After this project we think more about fashion and our clothes we buy and where they are from.
The project helped us to understand how Fast Fashion works and how to solve this problem.

In the manufacture of clothing en masse chemistry is used; especially in China or Mexico. This leads to enormous pollution of rivers and lakes. Many thousands of chemicals are used in textile production:
in washing, dyeing, processing and the finishing process. To make garments more stain resistant, plasticizers, flame retardants and solvents are used.

They
are harmful to health, hormonal effects or carcinogenic.
And the worst:
Many of them will not degrade.
So they accumulate in the water of the rivers,
in mud and in the food chain.
Even in polar bears or penguins some of the substances are now found.
They must be banned, and indeed throughout the
production chain.

Especially
in the manufacturing countries such as China, India and Bangladesh,
the massive use of chemicals is a major environmental problem because
the stuff ends up in the wastewater.
In China, the largest apparel exporter worldwide, 40 percent of the lakes and rivers are considered dirty.
"The fashion color you can see by the rivers," it says. But in other low-wage countries such as India, Bangladesh and Mexico, the environmental conditions are poor and the implications for the nature devastating.

How is our City getting green?
We found out that Oranienburg does a lot for nature. When public buildings like schools are renovated, they pay a lot of attention to make them ecological and green. The city builds new cycle paths and seating facilities at Lehnitz Lake, the greatest lake in Oranienburg. Besides that the city council decided to build new bird cages in our forest to improve the situation of our flora and fauna. We were happy to find out that there are several local political initiatives to make Oranienburg more ecological.
We also support the decision that after the federal garden show in Oranienburg in 2009, the garden can still be used. The park on this area, the Schlosspark, is for instance still used as a green classroom by schools from Brandenburg today.

However, there are also many things to improve in Oranienburg. Unfortunately too many trees are cut and not the same number of trees are replanted.

Green Businesses in Oranienburg
Oranienburg has some shops which help to be green. One of them is Bio Kräuterei Oberhavel. We went there and think that you might also like to buy herbs or old seeds from old breeds of the spinachplant there.

Green Energy in Oranienburg
The Stadtwerke also provide new green energy to the people in Oranienburg. They guarantee that 20% of the energy is renewable energy. In the future they want to offer 100% of renewable energy but they have not yet fixed a date to put that in execution.
Another planned project is the windpark in Lehnitz. Oranienburg plans to build some windmills into the forest of Lehnitz and Schmachtenhagen.
By the way, our school is also doing a lot. Students and teachers started an initiative many years ago so that our school is equipped with solar panels. We believe that more official buildings should follow our example and should also use solar panels.
Overall we think that Oranienburg is doing a good job to achieve sustainability, although there are a few things which could be improved.
